You’re Already Dead Volume One: Surprise an Attacker with Counterattack Tactics
The idea for this video came to long-time martial artist and best-selling Paladin author Joseph Simonet while he was salmon fishing on Lake Michigan. You might think that this is an incongruous thought for such a beautiful place. But, as most of us know, bad things do happen in nice places . . . even to nice guys. While he was enjoying the view and the fishing, Simonet and his party were confronted by a person he dubbed Johnny Law, who had nothing better to do than annoy them with his pompous rantings. As the interloper became more and more obnoxious, Simonet fantasized about how easy it would be to take out the man with a few decisive moves. “Dude, you’re already dead, and you don’t even know it,” Simonet chuckled to himself.
Realizing how quickly an unprepared person could be taken out if attacked suddenly, Simonet decided to come up with a series of quick defenses and counterattacks he would use in similar circumstances. What he came up with was the supported-elbow frame defense, which is highly effective against a direct upper body attack. Since then, Simonet has continuously improved it with modifications prompted by real-life fighting lessons. You’re Already Dead shows how it is not only a perfect cage defense, but also an efficient counterattack launching system. Check out this simple, versatile defense system so you don’t end up on the wrong end of a surprise lethal assault.
You’re Already Dead Volume Two: Be the Wolf
Realizing how quickly an unprepared person can be taken out if attacked suddenly, Joseph Simonet developed a series of techniques and strategies he would use in similar circumstances. In the first volume of You’re Already Dead: Surprise an Attacker with Counterattack Tactics , Simonet taught the improved method of supported-elbow frame defense. Now, in the second volume, You’re Already Dead 2: Be the Wolf, he examines the pros and cons of Filipino martial art training drills.
Working step-by-step through the flow drills, Simonet demonstrates that while these drills are undeniably valuable, in a real fight they can also be detrimental. From zoning to zero pressure, the six-count sambrada, rooftop blocks, inside sweeps, and the poli sute of pekiti tirsia to full arsenal demonstrations of the flow drills cons, Simonet graphically proves why martial arts drills might not work on the streets – and, in fact, might get you seriously hurt or even dead.
Even though these martial arts drills improve mobility and adaptability, which are great assets for a fighter, they could fail you when facing a gruesome and violent street encounter. To help you remember this, Simonet advises doing a simple mental exercise: spell “flow” backward… you get “wolf.” In a fight to the death, the wolf attitude is key. When you are attacked, you cannot be content to just defend and block; you must block and attack at the same time. If you want to be the wolf, you have to bite.
